Amber Rudd took to the stage for the election debate last night despite the death of her elderly father this week.
The Home Secretary represented the Conservatives instead of Theresa May on the 90 minute BBC special even though Tony Rudd passed away on Monday.
The retired stockbroker and Second World War pilot was 93.
A source told the Sun: ‘It just shows how tough she is’.
Miss Rudd also suffered the loss of her ex-husband, Sunday Times journalist AA Gill from cancer less than six months ago.
They were married for five years in the 1990s and had two children.
Mr Rudd had been planning to watch Wednesday night’s debate with the rest of his family, the Daily Telegraph reported.
A source told the newspaper: ‘The family got together on Tuesday night with all the children to celebrate their father’s life. Their father took such pride in her he would have loved it. He was actually looking forward to watching this debate.
‘It would have been madness for her (not to take part) – it’s just not what her father would have wanted.’
Mr Rudd, an Oxford University graduate, worked for the Bank of England.
After that he became a journalist, covering the Suez crisis for the Guardian and the stock market in the City, before setting up his own broking company in the City, called ‘Rowe Rudd’.

Miss Rudd represented the Tories in place of Mrs May, who was widely criticised for her no-show that overshadowed the live TV debate.
She appeared on the stage in Cambridge alongside Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, Liberal Democrat leader Tim Farron, Ukip’s Paul Nuttall, Green Party co-leader Caroline Lucas, Leanne Wood of Plaid Cymru and Scottish National Party deputy leader Angus Robertson.
In what was regarded as a predominately left-wing audience in the Remain supporting city, Miss Rudd endured a tough night.
At one stage, when she urged the audience to ‘look at our record’, she was met with mocking laughter and jeers.
When the Home Secretary defended the government’s record on creating jobs, Miss Lucas shock back: ‘That doesn’t pay nurses who need to go to foodbanks.’ The audience erupted into applause.
However Miss Rudd rounded on Mr Corbyn for what she termed his ‘fantasy economics’.
She said he was spending a ‘magic money tree’ while handling Britain’s finances like Monopoly money.

Following last night’s revelation, shadow international trade secretary Barry Gardiner, said: ‘My deep condolences to Amber. At any time, to have your father die is a real tragedy for anyone.
‘I know the pressures that are on politicians during an election campaign and the fact that she has been prepared to come and do that shows that she is an estimable woman.
‘But what does it say about Theresa May that knowing that Amber had been through that, she forced her to do it rather than to come in there and stand up for herself?’
A Conservative spokesman declined to comment on the decision to send Miss Rudd to the TV debate.
