State of Origin legend Andrew Johns has slammed his beloved NSW side for not targeting injured Queensland playmaker Johnathan Thurston during the Blues’ narrow loss to the Maroons on Wednesday night.
Thurston was instrumental in Queensland’s 18-16 win at Sydney‘s ANZ Stadium after he missed the series opener with an injured shoulder.
‘It’s the dumbest half of football NSW have played… Johnathan Thurston – his performance tonight was so courageous – his shoulder is stuffed,’ Johns said.
‘There’s your game plan. You just go at him all night. You go at him, and it puts pressure on the defenders either side.
Thurston helped seal the remarkable victory by slotting a sideline conversion in the dying minutes after a Dane Gagai try
‘They didn’t go to him once in the second half. I couldn’t believe what I was watching,’ Johns said

‘You’ve got a player out there who can not pick his arm up off the ground, and they didn’t target him… I don’t know what they were doing.’
As vision of Thurston struggling with his injury was shown, Johns continued: ‘You’ve got JT here, whose shoulder is absolutely buggered.
‘You can see there, he cannot pick his right shoulder up. There’s your game plan. You just go at him the whole game.’

Former Blues coach Phil Gould agreed: ‘At this level it’s pretty basic football.
‘You’ve got a wounded bloke in the other line you have to go and target him.’

The Blues’ loss means they will have to beat the Maroons in game three in Queensland to win their first series since 2014.
