Did Putin show Oliver Stone a fake video?
In episode three of ‘The Putin Interviews’ – a four-part series directed by Oliver Stone – Russian president Vladimir Putin was filmed showing footage on a cellphone that he claimed were Russian operations in Syria.
But they may not be Russian operations at all, according to a group of researchers.
The video shows Stone and Putin standing side-by-side as Putin shows the director a video on a cellphone.
As Putin shows Stone the video, subtitles pop up of Putin saying: ‘That’s how our airforces are operating.’

As Putin shows Stone the video, subtitles pop up of Putin saying: ‘That’s how our airforces are operating.’ But the Conflict Intelligence Team (CIT), a group of Russian researchers who track Russian involvement in military conflicts, says the video is from the US Department of Defense
‘These militants are running with arms, not just machine guns,’ Putin says as he points at the footage.
But the Conflict Intelligence Team (CIT), a group of Russian researchers who track Russian involvement in military conflicts, says the footage is from the US Department of Defense, according to Fox News.
Researchers believe the video is from either 2009 or 2013, showing anti-Taliban operations in Afghanistan.
The video continues to show an aircraft targeting soldiers on the ground.
CIT researcher Kirill Mikhailov told Fox that it appeared the video was originally posted on Military.com.
Mikhailov believes that someone got hold of it, put recordings of conversations between Ukrainian air force pilots over it, and published it last year on YouTube, as Russian military video from Syria, to see what viewers would do with it.
According to Mikhailov, his team matched up the original and the second video and the explosions each happen at the same time and the same place.
He told Fox that he believes with 100 per cent certainty the video Putin showed Stone is video of US troops in Afghanistan.
The Pentagon also told Fox that the video showed to Stone is not Russian military footage.
But the Kremlin told the network the video was part of a Ministry of Defense briefing to Putin.

The Kremlin said the phone was not Putin’s but an aide’s. The Kremlin also said it will be able to authenticate the video.
According to Russian network RT Stone told the reporters at a festival in Norway that Putin ‘brought out a phone and he showed it to us, we filmed it, and he said this was that’.
‘Why would he fake it? I mean, the Russians did very well in terms of damages to ISIS in Syria.’
Putin is the subject of Stone’s Showtime special called The Putin Interviews, which aired on June 12th over four consecutive nights.
So far, the Russian president told Stone how he has escaped numerous assassination attempts, and admitted that while Edward Snowden leaking confidential information was ‘wrong’, it does not make him a traitor.
The notoriously private president also disclosed he is a grandfather who rarely spends time with his family.
Stone filmed the documentary over the course of two years. The films include several conversations he had with Putin.
According to a press release, the interviews took place at the Kremlin, Sochi, and Putin’s official residence in Moscow.
The network says the film ‘captures the essence and complexity of the Russian leader and his approach to the US and the world’.
