Ed Miliband, pictured outside the BBC studios this morning, entertained his listeners by hosting a call-in about toilets
Ed Miliband could have been Prime Minister today if the 2015 General Election had gone the other way – but instead he was talking about toilets.
The former Labour leader, who is doing a hosting stint on the BBC Radio 2 Jeremy Vine show for the week, held a phone-in on lavatories.
The Labour politician discussed the relative merits of modern dual flush loos and the old Victorian ‘thunderbox’ systems in the bizarre phone-in.
And he invited fans to call in and flush their toilets live on air so listeners could decide which loo they most liked the sound of.
Mr Miliband asked his millions of listeners: ‘Is it time to sing the praises of old loos?
‘Okay as we heard they are not necessarily more water efficient, but is a solid, ornate Victorian toilet a thing of design and engineering beauty?
‘Perhaps you’ve got one in your house? The system mounted on the wall just before head height, a chain dangling down with a pull handle flush and it doesn’t leak.
‘We want to hear from you.’
Among the call-ins was the author Lucinda Lambton, who has penned a book about the delights of old-fashioned loos.
Invited to ‘wax lyrical for us about the thunderbox’ she regaled the MP with tales about a toilet designed to look like a swan and another which looked like a dolphin.
The former minister then asked:’ And never thought Id be asking this question I have got to say, but tell us a bout your toilet Lucinda.’
The author said hers was ‘not so hot’ but other listeners were keen to impress by sharing stories of their loos.
Mr Miliband won plaudits for his radio hosting skills.
Among his new fans was Lord Buckethead, a surreal character who stood against Theresa May in the General Election.
He wrote: ‘This human intrigues me. In Earth mythology I understand that Sisyphus similarly complimented the Gods when he was handed that boulder.’
