It promised a night of ‘unrivalled pleasure’ which included sensations of ‘ sight, sound, touch and taste – the neurosis of a night given over to beauty.’

Dress code was white tie, with ladies wearing fuull length evening dresses – and absolutely no short hemlines, although trousers were accepted.
But the ‘gentlemen’s’ dress code was a little more prescriptive with the code stipulating that they wore black single-breasted tailcoat with silk peaked lapels, black dress trousers with two lines of braid down the outside leg, a white marcella (cotton piqué) shirt with a starched detachable wing collar and double cuffs, cufflinks and studs, a low-cut, white marcella evening waistcoat (double or singlebreasted), a thin, white hand-tied marcella bow tie, highly polished or patent black lace-up shoes, worn with black laces (traditionally ribbon) and black socks.
Tight security was planned for the event and students were warned that searches would be possible.
Carriages were set for 5.30am and judging by the disheveled appearance of party-goers journeying home, they made the most of the all-night party.
