Shocking footage of children running across the M60 at rush hour has sparked grave police warnings that such actions can have ‘fatal consequences.’
The four teenagers ran across six lanes of traffic during evening rush hour on a section of the M60 motorway between Chadderton and Oldham.
Cars drive past at speeds of 70mph while the teenagers run between the fast-moving vehicles,Manchester Evening News reports.
Police have issued an urgent warning that ‘the consequences can be fatal’.
In the video, five teenagers are gathered at the side of the motorway.
Four of then them run across three lanes of the traffic and safely get to the central reservation but they then run through another three lanes on the opposite side.
Before the footage was filmed, the M.E.N. had witnessed a larger group of youths running up and down the steep grass motorway embankment and climbing over a metal safety barrier to stand on the hard shoulder.
Inspector Neil Anson, from the North West Motorway Police Group, said it was a finable offence for pedestrians to walk on a motorway carriageway or slip road unless there’s an emergency.
He said: ‘Playing on the motorway network, or using the motorway network as a short-cut, is simply not worth the risk. The consequences can be fatal.’
Five teens gathered by the M60 motorway between Chadderton and Oldham before four of them ran across six lanes of traffic moving at 70mph during evening rush hour
He said that reports of youths on motorways tend to increase during the hot weather and school holidays and he urged parents and schools to be vigilant and impress on young people the dangers of this behaviour.
‘Kids do not have an appreciation of how motorways work,’ he said.
The teens make it safely to the central reserve before sprinting across another three lanes. Inspector Neil Anson said walking on a motorway is a finable offence unless it’s an emergency
‘It is an offence to go onto a motorway but that offence was created to protect people and motorists. The motorway network is a very dangerous place to be for pedestrians – they have sadly been struck and killed in the past.
‘These things can quickly turn into fatalities. Parents should drum these messages into children and anybody involved in education should bang it home. The emergency services do not want to be responsible for incidents that could be avoided.’
Insp Anson added: ‘If anyone sees a pedestrian young or old on the motorway network they should dial 999.’
