Heavily-tattooed killer driver knew his eyesight was bad
A promising boxer with poor eyesight knew he shouldn’t be driving when he hit and killed a 77-year-old cyclist, throwing the elderly man into the air and 40 metres forward before fleeing the scene.
Bradley Azzopardi, who has a tattoo on his face that reads ‘no comment,’ knew his vision was severely impaired and that he had been disqualified from driving when he slammed into Gordon Ibbs on Mother’s Day in 2015, the Geelong County Court heard on Wednesday.
Mr Ibbs was cycling down Geelong Ballan Road, south of Melbourne, when he was hit by Azzopardi’s VT Holden Commodore and died instantly, according to The Geelong Advertiser.

Azzopardi, 26, who is serving jail time for drug and driving offences, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing death and failing to stop after an accident.
Each carry a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison.
‘(The impact) shunted the victim into the air and almost 40m forward,’ Crown prosecutor Sally Flynn said.
‘He was well aware of the fact he’d struck the victim. He doesn’t even get out of the car.’
Ms Flynn said after the accident Azzopardi drove home to Emmerson Road before he and a friend worked to hide the car from police helicopters, according to The Geelong Advertiser.

After months of police surveillance, Azzopardi was named as a suspect in the elderly man’s death and was arrested in November when he appeared in court for different charges.
He was captured on video swearing at police officers and swearing at them as he tried to wrangle free from their grip.
The 26-year-old was working his way up the amateur boxing ranks when he was diagnosed with keratoconous, an eye condition.
‘Mr Azzopardi has never been told he should not drive,’ Ms Flynn said.
Azzopardi is expected to be sentenced on Monday.
